St. Petersburg is located in the northwest part of
Russia at the head of the Gulf of Finland.
A Brief History of St. Petersburg
Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703, and it
was the capital of Russia between 1712 and 1918. During World
War I the city's Germanic name was changed to Petrograd,
and in 1924, after Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin died, the city's
name was changed to Leningrad. In June of 1991 the city was
again given its original name, and the name by which it is known
today, St. Petersburg.
